Job Requirements Under direct supervision of a registered nurse, participates in the nursing process by delivering care to patients and their families. Duties and responsibilities include direct care activities required in daily nursing practice on the assigned unit. The nurse will utilize this time to learn the institution and nursing practice. It is expected that a nurse in this role successfully meets all requirements of the Departmental Orientation. Utilizes the institution’s care delivery and professional practice models as the frame of reference for practicing as a professional nurse. Participates in activities to develop own practice, and to support group practice goals at the unit level. Identifying, recording, and reporting overt findings to the Registered Nurse concerning the physical and mental condition of a patient in accordance with the Nursing Documentation policy. Assisting The Registered Nurse Assigned To The Patient With The Implementation Of Nursing Care By Performing Nursing Care Activities As Delegated And Supervised By The Registered Nurse Such As Performing patient assessments after the initial assessment or after the first assessment of the shift has been performed by the registered nurse Assisting with indwelling and intermittent urinary bladder catheterizations by performing catheter insertion, catheter care and removal. Providing direct patient care, such as personal hygiene care, positioning, ambulating, transporting, nutritional intake/ feeding, obtaining specimens and performing blood sugar checks. Performing routine patient care and administrative procedures on the unit such as dressing changes, calculating body intake and output measures and shift totals. Assisting with patient admission and/or discharge by setting up special equipment and recording vital signs. Assisting with intravenous therapy by gathering equipment for starting IV fluids, preparing the patient as directed by the Registered Nurse and monitoring IV rate. Assists the Registered Nurse in patient status evaluation by reporting patient information such as vital signs or response to nursing actions such as pain management interventions. Verbally reports to the nurse significant changes in patient's physical and cognitive condition. Documents patient information such as vital signs, intake and output on appropriate forms promptly, clearly and completely as stipulated in the Nursing Documentation policy. The nurse graduate may administer medications under the DIRECT supervision of an RN. The nurse graduate may NOT administer medications independently. Performs CPR as needed. Follows institutional infection control guidelines. Follows/implements established institutional/unit policies and procedures to ensure patient safety. Communicates effectively with patients, families, visitors and other members of the health care team, demonstrating positive guest relations skills and treating patient information confidentially. Performs general support services for the unit and patient which may include running unit errands, procuring equipment, and taking and relaying messages accurately and timely. Work Experience Minimum Education, Experience, And License/Certification Required Licensure as a Registered Nurse in the state of Maryland, or eligible to practice due to Compact state agreements outlined through the MD Board of Nursing, is required. If graduate is completing the initial examination, testing must be completed within 90 days of the date that the graduate completed the school nursing program. Must meet all applicable federal, state, and local professional requirements Current AHA BLS certification required. Less than 12 months nursing experience. Basic Computer Skills Are Required. This includes providing nursing assessments, planning, interventions, evaluations, health related education, case management, and execution of the medical regime including administering medications and treatments prescribed by any person authorized to prescribe by state law. Level Descriptor Levels are distinguished based on the complexity of assigned duties, the level of expertise required for completion of work assignments, and the responsibility assigned for the supervision of others. This is the senior level of this job family where employees are assigned more advanced responsibility in an assigned work unit or in an assigned geographic area and may be assigned responsibility for direct supervision. Employees at this level will have complex assignments and a substantial degree of responsibility and independence in planning, organizing, and completing work. Employees at this level develop and present educational programs relevant to nursing practices and standards or care and follow-up with evaluation of learning. This position may include completing special assignments such as quality improvement, mentoring, and surveillance of potential patient care incidents of quality indicators for individuals who may be at risk for rapid status change. Responsibilities may include scheduling work assignments, evaluating health care and performance of assigned staff, providing training, and otherwise insuring quality. Administrative responsibilities may include approving leave and initiating disciplinary actions. Positions which are assigned independent responsibility for coordinating health services or providing nursing care in an assigned county or geographic area or as the only nurse in that location may also be included in this level. Employees at this level deal with complex health issues and may act for nurse managers in their absence. Education and Experience Education and Experience requirements at this level consist of possession of a valid Oklahoma license as a registered nurse as approved by the Oklahoma Board of Nursing and two years of professional nursing experience in a field of nursing appropriate to the health care setting; or Registered Nurse License recognized by the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC) and two years of professional nursing experience in a field of nursing appropriate to the health care setting. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Competencies Knowledge, Skills and Abilities required at this level include knowledge of professional nursing theory, practices, and techniques; of health promotion and disease prevention; of nursing management of available health care resources; of nutrition and diet therapy; of the functions of various clinical departments; of available health programs and resources; of federal and state rules and regulations concerning health services; of accreditation, certification and licensure standards; of preventive health practices; of principles and methods of teaching; of nursing standards; and of nursing policies and procedures. Ability is required to assist in the development, organization, and implementation of an effective nursing care plan; to provide education and training; to assess condition and needs of patients, families and communities appropriate to the care setting; to take appropriate intervention; to counsel and teach patients and families; to provide direction or guidance to non-licensed personnel in assigned area of responsibility to ensure quality care; to develop, plan, and implement an effective nursing care program; and to provide education and training. Candidates must possess sufficient proficiency in the English language to perform the essential functions of the position. Special Requirements Upon appointment, incumbents designated by the Oklahoma Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services shall complete certification in one of the following required Departmental sponsored training in case management: Certified Behavioral Health Case Manager – Adult; Certified Behavioral Health Case Manager – Child, Adolescent and Family; or Certified Behavioral Health Case Manager – Dual Certification. Upon a conditional offer of employment, Department of Mental Health and Substance Abuse Services applicants must submit to a physical examination and shall meet the physical examination requirements of occasionally lifting/carrying 50 pounds and able to push and pull a maximum force of 25 pounds.
