As an Advanced Practice Provider, you are responsible for comprehensive direct patient care management. In this role, you will utilize advanced assessment skills and knowledge of clinical therapeutics to evaluate, diagnose and manage patients on the Hospitalist Surgical Co-management Service. The APP orders and interprets appropriate diagnostic tests, therapeutic interventions and prescribes pharmacological agents as necessary. Essential Job Functions Under physician supervision, directs and coordinates care of hospitalist surgical co-management patients. The clinician will complete detailed histories and physicals collect and interpret reports from diagnostic lab tests, radiographic procedures, and clinical studies; as well as order tests, prescribe medications. Differentiates normal and abnormal variations for all body systems. Accurately interprets diagnostic tests. Gathers pertinent information systematically and skillfully from all sources: history, diagnostic tests, comprehensive physical examination, and psycho-social assessments Identifies educational needs of the patient and family and assists with teaching. Incorporates assessment findings into a plan to direct patient care. Accurately and appropriately performs routine diagnostic and therapeutic techniques according to established protocols and standardized procedures for advanced practice providers Initiates referrals based on patient and family need. The Nurse Practitioner is a member of the intensive care team and has as his/her primary responsibility the management of critically ill complex patients in an intensive care setting. The NP has specialized skill and knowledge related to the unique ICU setting in which s/he practices and performs physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts approved diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, and provides direct patient care services in a specific ICU, according to established protocols and utilizes evidence-based clinical practice standards. The NP contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, consulting, and provides leadership to the organization and nursing profession. Duties may include obtaining patient health histories and complete physical examinations, documenting findings noting pertinent normal and abnormal findings, ordering and interpreting appropriate diagnostic and laboratory tests. Mentors and coaches nursing staff to ensure continued professional development. Provides emotional and psychological support to patients and their families. Ensures operation of medical and administrative equipment by verifying emergency equipment availability, preventive maintenance and other measures. Ensures nursing supplies are maintained by reviewing usage reports, identifying trends and anticipating needs; submits supply orders as necessary. Seeks guidance from the Director and/or upper management for unusual or unanticipated circumstances that require deviation from financial/operational policies and standards of practice. Maintains documentation of patient care services by auditing patient and department records. Protects patients by carrying out infection-control policies and protocols, enforcing medication administration and storage procedures and controlled substance regulations. Participates in budget development process as directed. Participates in the department’s rotating management-on-call schedule, serving as the designated off-shift leadership representative to support operational oversight and escalation management. Leads, manages, coaches, and trains a team or department, provides guidance, support, and mentors to ensure optimal performance and productivity. Oversees the recruitment, hiring, team/department orientation, performance appraisals and disciplinary actions including up to termination processes for a team or department. Performs other duties as directed. LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS Current Virginia state license as a Registered Nurse or Registered Nurse holding a valid Compact State license. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Bachelor’s degree in nursing required. Master’s degree in Nursing or related field preferred. Healthcare/management experience required. Pediatric experience preferred. Possesses excellent leadership, communication, and analytical skills with the ability to plan, establish and maintain a professional work environment. Ability to identify problems and implement solutions for operational and organizational functions. Interpersonal skills necessary to direct subordinates and delegate tasks.
