This step-down unit provides inpatient care for pediatric patients requiring services from the Hematology/ Oncology, Transplant and Cellular Therapy, and Endocrine subspecialties. Admitting diagnoses include but are not limited to leukemia, lymphoma, brain tumors, neuroblastomas, solid organ malignancies, sickle cell disease, bleeding disorders, diabetes, and other types of genetic and immune disorders. In addition, stem cell and bone marrow donors are cared for on this unit. The type of patient care provided in this area is complex due to patient diagnosis, the intensity of therapy, the criticality of patient condition, and the extensive patient/family issues that necessitate nursing intervention. This position can flex to all units in the hospital as well to the hematology oncology clinic as needed. Essential Functions Ensuring a clean and safe patient care unit, assisting patients with activities of daily life (bath, feed, play, etc. Collects patient specimens (blood, urine, stool, other per policy), paying close attention to patient safety, comfort, and accuracy of information. Uses Hospital Information Systems as required for patient care, (e.g., documenting vital signs and patient care activities.) Accurately relays information from physicians, nurses, laboratory personnel and others. Overview The Neonatal Nurse Practitioner will direct patient care of neonates according to established protocols, policies, procedures, and accepted standards of care in collaboration with Pediatric Hospitalists and Chair of Dept. of Pediatrics. Specifics Level 1 nursery NNP rounds daily in collaboration with pediatric hospitalist Attend high-risk deliveries and cesarean sections Resuscitation and stabilization of neonates Communication and consult with tertiary care center and preparation for neonatal transport Management of common neonatal problems, including respiratory distress, hypoglycemia, rule-out sepsis, hyperbilirubinemia Special populations include late preterm infants and infants with neonatal opioid withdrawal syndrome Respond to ED for neonates and to assist with IV placement and labs This is a non-traditional setting for an NNP; it is challenging if coming from a NICU environment with a full team of skilled NICU staff. The candidate must be able to function independently, direct a team, and perform all skills related to resuscitation and stabilization. A pediatric hospitalist is present for 8 hours a day and on call from home for the remainder of the 24-hour shift. You will work with a small established team of NNPs who provide 24/7 coverage. The current model is 24 hour shifts with the occasional moonlighting shift. The NNP call room is adjacent to L&D and functions as both office and sleep space for the NNP team. The Director of Women's and Children's Services serves as liaison between the NNP team, Beebe Medical Group, and the hospital. We average 60-70 births per month and 4-6 transfers per month. This Advanced Practice Provider will be responsible for communicating with families and coordinating care in both the hospital and outpatient setting. Additional responsibilities include participation in trauma resuscitation in addition to surgical and trauma consultations throughout the hospital. Coverage expectations include a combination of overnight, weekend and day shifts.
