Rutgers, The State University of New Jersey, is seeking a Part Time UCHC Mental Health Staff Nurse for New Jersey State Prison, located in Trenton, NJ The Staff Nurse utilizes the nursing process to meet a variety of health care needs with ambulatory care as a primary focus for inmates in the New Jersey Department of Corrections. Duties include: Provides direct and indirect nursing care to meet physiological and emotional needs of the resident-patient including adolescents (13-17 years), adults (18 to 64 years) and their family within the framework established by the correctional system. Performs assessments of resident-patient in a variety of settings such as initial intake area, health care unit for sick call, emergency situations in housing, chronic care clinics and infirmary. Works with a variety of health care professionals and security officers in a correctional environment. Identifies inmate-centered goals and nursing objectives and implements prescribed interventions and solutions for the identified problems. Plans nursing care by identification of resident-patient needs based on assessments. Makes appropriate, timely referrals and initiates appropriate nursing care based on institutional policies and procedures. As team leader or charge nurse, delegates duties to other health care team members based on their skill, knowledge and experience and guides the provision of care by others.

The Clinical Decisions Unit (CDU) is a35-bed, single-room unit.The patients are typically here for observation or if needed to be admitted as an inpatient they will stay in CDU until a floor bed is available. Multidisciplinary rounds are done Monday – Friday. This involves the patient in their care and allows the team members to collaborate with the patient to give them the best possible care and appropriate discharge to home or other facilities. The Express Admit Unit (EXAU) is under the management of the CDU. There are 6-bed areas where the admitted patients stay until a floor bed is available. This gives them privacy and care while waiting for their room to be available. Both CDU and EXAU can have patients on telemetry for cardiac monitoring. Assesses and evaluates patient’s status by: A. Writing and initiating plan of care B. Regularly re-evaluating patient and family/caregiver needs C. Uses health assessment data to determine nursing diagnosis. 6. Develops a care plan that establishes goals, based on nursing diagnosis and incorporates palliative nursing actions. Fulfills the obligation of requested and/or accepted case assignments. 6. Actively participates in quality assessment performance improvement teams and activities. POSITION QUALIFICATIONS 1. Graduate of an accredited school of nursing 2. Registered Nurse, with a License in good standing to practice. 3. Registered nurses shall have a minimum of (a) one (1) year of experience as a professional nurse within the last three (3) years; OR have a baccalaureate degree in nursing and minimum of two (2) years’ experience, at least one of which is in the area of public health, home care, or hospice nursing is preferred. 4.
