Functions in collaboration with the health care team in accordance with certification and licensure. Practice emphasizes health promotion, disease prevention and the diagnosis and treatment of acute and chronic health problems. Responsible for dissemination of knowledge through instructing, leading and developing educational programs. Job Details Cleveland Clinic Mercy Hospital is seeking qualified APRN, PA or CNS for the General Surgery department. The Provider will help manage the pre-operative, including history and physicals. In addition, managing patients on the floor post-operatively by writing progress notations, removing drains, and attending to any wound or healing issues. Provider will also have opportunities to first or second assist in the operating room. Schedule: Monday-Friday, rotating weekends/holidays 4 10-hr shifts, shifts will vary between hours of 6:30am and 4:30pm. No call requirements Responsibilities: Conducts thorough medical histories, performs complete physical examinations (where indicated), initiates appropriate lab, radiology tests or other special tests required for evaluation of illness, and scrutinizes lab data to establish a record of the patient's current health status and to develop a working diagnosis and treatment plan. Works in collaboration with the health care team. Performs and interprets common laboratory, radiologic, cardiographic and other routine diagnostic procedures used to identify pathophysiologic processes as credentialed and privileged by the Medical Executive Committee and the Governing Body of the applicable hospitals. Performs routine and specialized procedures as credentialed and privileged by the Medical Executive Committee and the Governing Body of the applicable hospitals. May prescribe and monitor medications as allowed by license through applicable state board and Cleveland Clinic policies. Educates patients and answers questions regarding their disease, treatments, related drug and treatment side effects and hazards. Participates in medical team rounds; collaborates with nursing, medical and other healthcare team members regularly to ensure quality patient care. Refers patients to specialists as appropriate for consultation or for specialized health resources and treatment. Ensures continuity of care by serving as a liaison between patient and other members of the multi-disciplinary care team or with other specialty areas as necessary. Participates in quality monitoring thru the review of records and treatment plans for patient outcomes on a periodic basis to assure quality care. Facilitates appropriate length of stay, discharge planning and compliance with regulatory standards for inpatient management. Supports professional development of the health care team. Job Description Primary responsibility involves performance of specific tasks, as a scrub technologist and/or during surgical procedures to facilitate the efficient and safe progress of the surgical case. Assists with the maintenance of surgical instruments, supplies, and equipment. Maintains positive customer relations. Shall demonstrate competency and possess the technical skills appropriate for his/her assigned cases and utilizes that knowledge in assisting others. Performs various duties within his/her scope of responsibility and is accountable to the Clinical Manager. Responsibilities General Duties Checks daily assignment. Reviews surgical preference lists to clarify surgical routine and update preference lists as needed. Utilize resources to obtain needed supplies for the case. Checks table(s) for complete readiness for each procedure. Ensures all items needed for the case are present: Obtains physician’s special instruments and sutures prior to start of the case. Demonstrates knowledge and dexterity in handling of special supplies and equipment and assures its proper functioning. Is knowledgeable of the specifics of the surgical procedure and able to perform these tasks in an organized and efficient manner. Under the surgeon’s supervision, assists with suctioning secretions, holding retractors, assisting with skin closure, cutting sutures and irrigating wounds. Circulates for operative procedures under supervision of R.N. At the end of procedure assist with site care Cleanses operative site. Connects drainage tubes to appropriate devices. Assists and/or applied sterile dressing. Assists with patient transfer to bed/stretcher. Covers soiled gloves with clean exam gloves. Assists with transfer with adequate number of assistants present. Responsible for knowing and using good body mechanics. Disassembles table(s) contents and instruments, and places in proper receptacles for cleaning. Keeps operative field free of unused instruments, equipment, and sharps. Receives instruments from surgeon. Keeps instruments clean by wiping blood and tissue from instruments. Removes unnecessary articles from the operative field. Follows universal precautions according to hospital policy. Qualifications KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS (e.g. BSN required, MSN preferred.): Has contact with physicians, families, and other hospital personnel related to care of assigned patients. Sound judgment and knowledge of scientific principles must be used. Competency in selected skills is required through hospital provided instruction. Frequent exposure to stressful patient situations requires the ability to maintain composure in order to respond swiftly and effectively to patient needs. EDUCATION: The surgical technologist has completed education in surgical technology and/or has completed on the job experience/training which allows the technologist to obtain certification.
