This unit cares for patients who are antepartum, during labor and delivery, and postpartum. There are 2 operating rooms and a recovery room with 2 recovery bays on the floor. The OR suites are staffed by Family Birth Center and Surgical Technologists trained for cesarean sections and post delivery procedures. All rooms are equipped with an emergency call system to the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU). Labor nurses are trained to circulate in the OR and PACU to maximize continuity of care. In an environment of continuous quality improvement, the Surgical Technologist, Labor and Delivery is responsible for performing a wide variety of patient care activities in the operating room scope of activities while supporting the medical and nursing plan of care to patients. The Surgical Technologist, Labor and Delivery handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. The position has an understanding of the procedure being performed and anticipates the needs of the surgeon while having the necessary knowledge and ability to ensure quality patient care during the operative procedure and is constantly on vigil for maintenance of the sterile field. The Surgical Technologist, Labor and Delivery is also responsible for assisting registered nurses in the delivery of patient care and maintains a clean, adequately stocked unit.
