Job Summary: Under the direction of the clinical manager, and supervision of the surgeon, registered nurses, and other surgical personnel, a surgical technologist, also known as surgical tech or operating room technician, is a crucial member of the surgical team. Their primary role involves preparing the operating room by setting up surgical instruments, sterile drapes, and other equipment. This position assists surgeons during the procedures by passing instruments, holding retractors, and managing surgical supplies. Surgical techs must maintain a sterile environment to prevent infections. This role must have a thorough knowledge of surgical procedures and aseptic techniques. The scope of their responsibility can vary depending on the complexity of surgeries performed. Surgical Technician Qualifications: High School diploma or equivalent required. Technical Diploma in Surgical Technology required. Associate Degree in Surgical Technology preferred. Graduate from an accredited surgical technology program required. BLS/CPR required upon hire or obtain prior to patient care. Certified Surgical Technologist preferred. Essential Functions Prepares the operating room by ensuring surgical instruments, equipment, and supplies are properly set up and available based on the procedure and physician preference card. Maintains a sterile field throughout the surgical procedure, applying principles of Universal Precautions, asepsis, and sterile technique. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon, passing instruments and supplies accurately and efficiently during surgical procedures. Handles surgical instruments and equipment according to manufacturer instructions and hospital policy, including inspection, point-of-use cleaning, and sterilization.
