Overview POSITION SUMMARY : The Surgical Tech works under the supervision and delegatory authority of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive and non-invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. The surgical tech recognizes significant conditions and reactions of the patient and notifies the appropriate patient care team as necessary. Qualifications REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS: Surgical Technologist I: Education: High School Diploma or GED; requires completion of a Surgical Tech program with the ability to sit for certification OR 2 years minimum working in a Surgical Tech role. Experience: Minimum of 2 years in a Surgical Technologist/Technician role if completion of a Surgical tech program has not been completed. Licensure/Certification: American Heart Association CPR (BLS) Other Skills/Knowledge: Excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Solid computer skills, including proficiency with Microsoft software. Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with the ability to be detail oriented. Requires intra-operative orientation to learn department/unit policies, procedures and work routines; to develop competency in the use of medical equipment and instruments used in the procedure/operating room; to learn quality/safety standards; and to gain an understanding of the various types of surgical procedures within their service line. Surgical Technologist II: Education: High School Diploma or GED; requires completion of a Surgical Tech program and Surgical Technologist Certification with a minimum of 3 years working in a Surgical Tech role OR minimum 5 years working in a Surgical Tech role. About the Role The Certified Surgical Technologists is an allied health professional, who is an integral part of the team of medical practitioners providing surgical care to patients. The Certified Surgical Technologists work under the supervision of a surgeon to facilitate the safe and effective conduct of invasive surgical procedures, ensuring that the operating room environment is safe, that equipment functions properly, and that the operative procedure is conducted under conditions that maximize patient safety. POSITION’S ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES: The Certified Surgical Technologist handles the instruments, supplies, and equipment necessary during the surgical procedure. Under supervision, assist RN circulator with post-operative duties Assists in the delivering of nursing care in a manner that minimizes the risk of transfer of infection and accidental contamination. Assists in delivering care in a manner which protects the patient from injury. Care is provided with an emphasis on continually improving quality, service and cost effectiveness. Job Title: Surgical Tech II Department: Surgery-Hospital Reports to: OR Shift Charge, OR Assistant Manager, OR Manager, Director of Surgical Services Schedule: Mon - Wed/ Wed - Fri 630 - 1900 Holiday Rotation A Definition of Position : Facilitates the operative or other invasive procedure by preparing and providing the required sterile instruments, supplies and equipment. Maintains the sterile field and anticipates and responds to the needs of the surgical team. Responsibilities Essential Job Functions : Preoperative Duties are as follows: Donning OR attire and personal protective equipment (PPE). Gathers, checks and opens supplies and equipment needed for the surgical procedure. Performs the surgical scrub, and donning gown and gloves. Sets up the sterile back table and Mayo stand with instruments, supplies, equipment, and medications/solutions needed for the procedure. Performs initial instrument, sharps and sponge counts with the circulator. Assists the team members with gowning and gloving. Assists with draping the patient and establishing the sterile field. Participates in the surgical site and patient verification during the time out procedure. Secures tubing, cords and other sterile accessories. Maintains sterile field and reports any contamination. Intraoperative Duties are as follows: Prepares and anticipates additional instrumentation, equipment and supplies for usage during the procedure. Anticipates the needs of the surgeon by passing instruments and supplies to surgeon during procedure. Labels, measures and passes medications, hemostatic agents and irrigation solutions utilized during the surgical procedure. Holds retractors or instruments as directed by the surgeon. Sponges or suctions the operative site. Applies electrocautery to clamps or forceps on bleeders. Cuts suture material as directed by the surgeon. Coordinates the camera or changes out robotic arms/instruments during endoscopic surgery as directed by the surgeon. Maintains highest standard of sterile technique during the procedure. Performs additional counts as necessary. Prepares sterile dressings and/or immobilization devices. Prepares and passes off specimen(s) as appropriate. Cleans and prepares instruments for terminal sterilization. Assists other members of the team with terminal cleaning of room. Assists in prepping the OR for the next patient. Participates in debriefing and quality improvement practices to ensure quality patient care. Postoperative Duties are as follows: When SPD is unavailable, decontamination of instruments/equipment. Assist with post procedure cleaning of the operative or other invasive procedure room and prepare room(s) for subsequent patients. Other Duties are as follows: Maintain privacy and confidentiality of individuals and health information. Participate in ongoing educational and competency verification activities applicable to scrub person activities. Assist with stocking chores.
