Description The Nurse Manager (NM) is responsible for the management of nursing practice and operations on a designated unit/service setting such as inpatient, procedural, emergency department or ambulatory care. This includes, but is not limited to, the management of: clinical nursing practice, staff recruitment, retention, labor relations, supply chain and budget, staffing, employee performance evaluation, quality improvement, staff education, medical records, internal and external regulatory and survey requirements. The Nurse Manager collaborates with multiple professionals to support and coordinate the provision / management of patient care. This individual works closely with the Nursing Clinical Director, unit Dyad partner and staff in insuring that the Service/Unit setting maintains the highest standards of patient care and is responsive to the needs of the patient & family as well as the organization. Responsibilities Patient Care Leads nursing practice using the tenets of the Professional Practice Model of Relationship Centered Care and the Care Delivery Model of Modified Primary Nursing for the promotion of the patient experience. Demonstrates proficiency in all aspects of Care Checks and role models expected behaviors. Ensures the integration of Care Checks into clinical activities to enhance Relationship Centered Care validates staff members Care Checks on all patients by direct observation and patient feedback. Assesses staff competency in Care Checks/PHR and provides consistent meaningful feedback with more focused feedback as needed. Conducts rounding of patients on a daily basis (Monday-Friday.) Conducts rounding on staff on a weekly basis. Communicates quantitative and qualitative information regarding the patient experience and staff engagement to the staff and the Interdisciplinary Patient Care Team that leads to the development and implementation of an action plan. Collaborates with the physician dyad and escalates concerns as appropriate. Follows up on all patient concerns in a timely manner and provides service recovery as needed. Demonstrates caring, agility, respect, compassion, empathy and active listening through dialogue, body language and actions. Patient Experience Role models the tenets of Mount Sinai Relationship Centered Care (MSHRCC) through facilitation of the following actions but not limited to: Admission Welcome, Bedside Shift Report, HELP, AM/PM Care, Dedicated Sit Down, Purposeful Hourly Rounding (PHR)/Care Checks, Medication Review, Discharge Wrap Up, and MD/RN Unit Collaboration as applies to the care setting (inpatient, procedural ambulatory). Participates and facilitates Communication Huddle with staff at the start of the shift, identifying high-risk patients who require special attention and escalates concerns in a timely manner for resolution.. Communicates to nursing leadership concerns or issues identified during huddle and throughout shift. Initiates service recovery for patients and family members who have concerns and escalates to Nursing Director/designee and Patient Relations as needed. Interprets and communicates patient experience scores and benchmarks and keeps staff informed of progress and areas of opportunity. Empowers staff to use evidence-based practices to increase understanding of patients’ perceptions of care. Demonstrates caring, respect, compassion, empathy and active listening through verbal and body language and actions. Quality and Safety Designs, supports and leads a safe, therapeutic and efficient patient-centered care environment for professional practice. Identifies and investigates issues or variances in practice/operations by participating in the RCA process and implements corrective action plans/safety solutions accordingly. Participates in unit and hospital based quality, patient safety and patient experience process improvement initiatives Utilizes the principles of Lean methodology for process improvement through the use of the Daily Management Boards. Fosters a fair and open Just Culture that encourages error and near-miss occurrence reporting. Leads interdisciplinary quality improvement teams using the principles of high reliability. Reviews unit progress, changes, and compliance with quality and safety metrics with clinical nurses and other members of the healthcare team. Responds to escalations of potential safety hazards or gaps from best practice by correcting concerns following institutional chain of command protocol. Monitors institutional information technology infrastructure and corrects gaps in clinical nursing documentation. Leads staff participation in quality and safety initiatives and mandated compliance measures. Demonstrates accountability for all unit quality and safety practices and compliance, and ensures required evaluation of staff competencies is maintained. Operations and administration Supports implementation of the mission, vision, goals and objectives of the department, throughout the clinical service and individual patient care units. Provides administrative and clinical oversight to ensure that all activity (staffing, support services, inter disciplinary collaboration, resources and financial viability) supports the goals of the organization. Works collaboratively with physician dyads and all members of the healthcare team to promote patient care and regulatory standards. Prioritizes recruitment and retention strategies in accordance with system and local hospital retention goals. Maintains a nursing unit in compliance with all regulatory agency mandates, including the regulations of NYS DOH and The Joint Commission. Oversees 24 hour patient care delivery, throughput, staffing and processes to ensure efficient and effective operations in all clinical specialties. Implements and monitors unit salary and supply budgets, including capital equipment allocation, budget variances, management of OT and vacancies according to MSHS financial goals. Monitors availability and maintenance of nursing equipment and supplies Maintains position control of established positions and manages the recruitment and retention of qualified staff. Maintains patient/employee confidentiality in the management of information. Evaluates nursing staff performance and mentors, coaches, counsels and disciplines staff as needed. Evaluates all newly hired/transferred staff and participates in the decision about passing the probationary period. Participates in the ongoing and completes the annual performance appraisals for all staff. Completes performance improvement plans of employees as needed and shares feedback with the Associate Directors/Directors and Senior Directors accordingly. Interprets and implements the associated collective bargaining agreements and System and Hospital policies and procedures. Performs disciplinary actions as necessary with collaboration with Nursing and Labor Relations. Acts as a management witness in disciplinary activities. Insures all staff have met their orientation goals/weekly progress reports and annual competency requirements and participates in the Competency Planning Tool for unit/service. Conducts regular staff meetings to ensure communication with staff about progress, changes and compliance with all hospital policies and procedures. Maintains records of minutes for staff team meetings. Encourages, recognizes and rewards staff participation in quality and safety initiatives, compliance and successes. Facilitates organizational change initiatives by using effective strategies. Leads a shared decision making model by establishing a structure of shared governance, just culture and staff engagement in practice councils, departmental meetings and initiatives. Responds to protest of assignment in a timely manner as detailed in the collective bargaining agreement and discusses the resolution in unit staff meetings. Participates in staffing planning committees to meet all NYS mandatory requirements to insure safe staffing Professional Development Performs as a clinical leader who actively creates and supports nursing practice and an environment of care that reflects clinical excellence. This position is designed to implement and controls nursing systems on the unit in collaboration with other nursing and multi-disciplinary personnel. Assists in developing and implementing specific programs. Ensures direct nursing care of residents by nursing personnel. Assumes various management duties on the unit, including acting ADON in the absence of the DON. RN Manager, RN Leadership, Nurse Manager, Nurse Leadership, Registered Nurse Manager, Registered Nurse Leader Requirements Education: Minimum of a 2 year RN - Registered Nurse nursing diploma/associate nursing degree. BSN preferred. Licenses/Certification: Registered Nurse with a current license in the District of Columbia. BLS/CPR required. Experience: Two years’ experience in geriatric nursing. Participation in professional organizations, dealing primarily in geriatrics preferred. Minimum of two years nursing administration experience preferred, preferably in a long term care setting. Knowledge of basic computer skills.
