Registered Nurse (RN) - Apheresis / Blood Donor Program

Overview Blood Donor Program 36 hours per week Apheresis (A-fer-E-sis) is a well-established specialty involving several interdisciplinary teams including transfusion medicine, hematology/oncology, laboratory medicine, immunology, transplant medicine, neurology, and cardiology. Apheresis nurses manage various procedures including therapeutic plasma exchanges, red blood cell exchanges, LDL apheresis, extracorporeal photopheresis, peripheral blood stem cell collections, and CAR-T cell collections. Procedures are performed at a single academic hospital under the supervision of an on-site Transfusion Medicine physician. The apheresis program is predominantly an outpatient service with inpatient procedures performed when medically indicated. In addition to running the apheresis instruments, nursing tasks include patient education, vascular access evaluation and care, medicationadministration, reaction management, and coordination of care. Apheresis nurses undergo a rigorous on-site training process that includes a thorough education on principles of apheresis medicine, preparation and maintenance of apheresis machines, and reaction protocols. As an additional bonus, the nurses oversee the care of our healthy blood donors in the Blood Donor Program.
