Job Description The PACU RN is responsible for the delivery of safe, effective, and quality patient-family centered care in the pre-surgical and post-anesthesia care units for all patient populations. Assesses patient’s pre-surgical status and compliance with pre-surgical criteria per organizational guidelines. Assesses patient’s post-operative status at intervals according to organizational policies and procedures. Interprets information accurately from various noninvasive and invasive monitors. Demonstrates knowledge of underlying pathophysiology of commonly encountered disease processes. Demonstrates knowledge of the physiology associated with various anesthesia techniques and surgical or procedural interventions. Applies the relevant scoring system/discharge criteria for patient transfer accurately as defined by organizational policy. Develops and implements an individualized perianesthesia plan of care. Manages patient recovery from general, monitored, regional, and local anesthesia. Protects patients from injury caused by positioning, thermal sources, and extraneous objects Communicates patient status throughout the perianesthesia continuum of care. Provides acute pain and comfort management as needed. Administers medications correctly by implementing the rights of safe medication practices. Performs interventions to maintain the integrity of surgical wounds and tissue perfusion, ensures normothermia, protects patients from infection, addresses co-morbid conditions, and monitors hydration. Assesses knowledge level of patient or designated support person in providing education regarding the expected psychosocial response, nutritional management, medication management, pain and comfort management, wound management, and expected responses to the operative or invasive procedure. Starting rate is $90,000/per year Responsibilities Lead and train teams to support programmatic initiatives, goals, and the unique needs of individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities Manage team performance through effective communication, training, performance management, staff meetings, employee recognition, and internal control reviews Provide treatment and health care procedures ordered by a physician and required by the standards of professional practice or law Train staff on the healthcare needs, medical conditions, and plan of care for assigned individuals Develop and conduct comprehensive training programs Develop and update nursing care plans and health care plans with an interdisciplinary team to include any concerns, observations, and behavioral developments Ensure nursing protocols comply with state and board of nursing regulations and guidelines Advise supervisor of all concerns and issues related to the provision of nursing services Ensure nurse assessments and program documentation are completed accurately and timely Monitor health and medical conditions of individuals and refer for medical services as needed Assess systemic risk management issues with the administration of medications Review all medication errors, analyze each error, and report per state regulations Build a support network for individuals by developing and maintaining relationships with community members, businesses, and families Follow strict infection control procedures regarding blood borne pathogens Available after hours by phone for on call emergency telephone triage Minimum Requirements Bachelor’s degree in nursing or related field Valid RN license allowing you to practice in assigned state Valid driver’s license with a satisfactory driving record Minimum two years of experience as a registered nurse Complete all state and agency required training Remain abreast of all board of nursing regulations and industry standards Experience supporting individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities Knowledge of state regulatory agency operations and standards relevant to supporting individuals with intellectual or developmental disabilities Team-oriented with demonstrated leadership experience Proficient with Microsoft Office Experience working with electronic health record systems; Therap preferred Employment is contingent upon successful completion of checks of criminal background, central registry, child abuse registry, and drug testing Why Community Options? Patients with injuries that are stable but require ongoing close monitoring are admitted to this unit directly from the ED or the Ross Trauma Admitting Area. Patients are also admitted to the unit as they are downgraded from the Trauma/Surgical ICU or the Trauma Step-Down Unit. Patients usually cared for in this area include those with traumatic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, rib fractures and lung injuries, as well as diverse orthopedic injuries requiring frequent monitoring and care. The unit is staffed with registered nurses, critical care technicians, trauma surgery nurse practitioners and resident physicians. Staff also work closely with respiratory therapy and specialized surgical groups such as orthopedics and neurosurgery. Nurses and critical care technicians working in this area receive education specific to the care of the trauma patient. Experience Required A minimum of one year or more of RN acute care experience in an inpatient setting is preferred Education Requirements Graduate of NLN accredited School of Nursing. License/Certification Requirements Current NJ-RN License (Registered Nurse). Patients usually cared for in this area include those with trauma tic brain injuries, spinal cord injuries, rib fractures and lung injuries, as well as diverse orthopedic injuries requiring frequent monitoring and care. Patients may also be transferred to the TSDU from the Trauma /Surgical ICU when their clinical condition has improved but close monitoring or ventilator support is still required . The unit is staffed with registered nurses, critical care technicians, trauma surgery nurse practitioners and resident physicians. Staff also work closely with respiratory therapy and specialized surgical groups such as orthopedics and neurosurgery. Nurses and critical care technicians working in this area receive education specific to the care of the trauma patient.
