SUMMARY Provides direct nursing care to clients during the surgical abortion procedure and for recovery care for post-surgical abortion period. The RN works in partnership with the Health Center Team to provide quality patient care and excellent customer service. Participates as a member of a team providing confidential, quality patient services, allowing patients to maintain a sense of dignity, trust and safety. Follows PPFA and the organization’s protocols, policies and procedures and any center-specific policies and procedures. Ensures that any client who requests an abortion is aware that she may change her decision at any time and will be provided with alternatives and will receive accurate information and appropriate referrals. Dispenses medications to the client as directed by the abortion physician. At the end of each procedure day, secures all medication used in the procedure room in a locked and designated area for pharmaceutical storage. DIRECT RESPONSIBILITIES Recovery Room • Monitor patients in recovery room, including taking vital signs, dispensing medication, giving verbal and written aftercare instructions and birth control information, and reporting signs or symptoms of post abortion complications to the MD on duty. Informs client of need for post-abortion follow-up. • Maintains client statistics to be given to on-call staff. • Maintains accurate inventory of all drugs that are dispensed in the recovery room. • Completes appropriate cleanup of the recovery room at the end of each clinic including but not limited to locking up medications, cleaning recliners, emptying trash.
