Job Description BCH Oakland Day Hospital Infusion Center serves the Specialty populations at UCSF Benioff Children’s Hospital. The treatments include but are not limited to apheresis, chemotherapy, biotherapy, immunotherapy, blood transfusions, hydration and electrolyte therapy, injections and blood draws, enzymes and iron infusions, and antibiotics. The center consists of 14 beds, and treatments include research and standard of care infusions. The infusion centers are staffed by Nurses, Medical Assistants, and a Practice Coordinator. This position requires the incumbent to utilize the nursing process for assessment, planning, implementation and evaluation to provide safe, therapeutic care. Functions as a member of the interdisciplinary and nursing teams; carries out established nursing procedures and performs related duties as required; performs nursing care for patients with complex needs. Manages patient care administered by other members of the nursing team. Recognized as a leader and clinical resource. Demonstrates investment in the overall forward movement of the practice and the organization. Qualifications Required Qualifications: Two (2) or more years of recent pediatric nursing experience with at least 1 year in oncology, or 2 years of other directly relevant clinical experience. A Brief Overview Prescribes, delegates and coordinates professional nursing care to pediatric and adult congenital heart patients through the use of nursing process and in accordance with hospital policy/procedure. Essential Functions Implements a comprehensive plan of care for the cardiology patient/family: Teaches the patient/family about all aspects of congenital heart disease such as anatomy/physiology, medications, blood work, activities, and follow -up. Communicates the medical plan and related nursing care implementations to PCP and other medical resources involved in patient's care. Monitors outpatient lab work and reports findings to cardiologist as needed. Authorizes prescription refills under provider supervision. Provides outpatient cardiology clinic nursing coverage Reviews patient chart to assure outpatient testing is correct and appropriate. Staffs outreach clinics with cardiologists as assigned, traveling required. Acts as liaison between pediatric cardiology, patients and their families and other health care team members: Communicates the cardiologist plan of care to the patient/family. Schedules diagnostic tests and procedures when necessary, including prior authorizations. Coordinates necessary lab work, follow-up testing, and communicates any medical changes to the patient/family. Refers patient needs/concerns to the cardiologist for medical follow-up. Acts as patient advocate to address the patient’s needs and concerns. Serves as the resource for answering patient/family questions or concerns regarding medical plan of care. Works with referring physicians in coordinating and implementing patient care issues and scheduling of cardiology procedures. Attends weekly cardiac catheterization conferences in person or via zoom, attends cardiac educational offerings when appropriate Regular attendance at work is an essential function of the job. Position Summary: Provides high quality nursing care for assigned patients in a scientific and humanistic focus. The Newly Licensed Registered Nurse (NLRN) utilizes a holistic systems approach to protect and promote client wellness and safety in the physiological, psychological, social cultural, developmental and spiritual domains. Nursing interventions are interdisciplinary, age specific and are directed toward optimal wellness. The NLRN is a nurse who is in their first year of nursing practice. This role ends on the one‐year anniversary of their hire date. At this time, the NLRN transitions to the role of Staff Registered Nurse. The NLRN may occupy a Staff Registered Nurse position after the matching process, but is still considered an NLRN for the first year of practice. NLRNs are not allowed to cover the unit for lunches or breaks or be a shift/charge nurse until they have completed the orientation period. Education, License & Cert: The NLRN must be a graduate of a Diploma, Associate Degree or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program and have passed the state board examination by the State Board of Nursing in their state of practice before beginning employment. NLRNs who are graduates of a Diploma or Associate Degree program or possess a non‐Nursing Bachelor’s Degree must demonstrate enrollment in a BSN program within 12 months of hire and earn a BSN within four (4) years from their date of hire. The NLRN must successfully complete a medication and IV challenge examination, as outlined by the hospital within the orientation period, as well as maintain CPR certification. Experience: The NLRN enters practice at a Guthrie Hospital through the Newly Licensed Registered Nurse Residency Program. Clinical specialty tracks may be offered at individual hospitals.
