Ensures proper illness and injury care and disease prevention, diagnosis, treatment, and recovery. The Nurse Practitioner works within a collaborative model to provide quality care and to improve patient outcomes by strengthening continuity of care in all settings for patients, families, and staff in both the hospital and physician practice settings. When department/case applicable, the Nurse Practitioner (NP) remains responsible for the patient throughout the course of the treatment, provides the physical examination, the diagnosis, and the health care plan, determines when the patient has recovered, and releases the patient. The NP may refer the patient to physicians for consultation or to specialized health resources for treatment but retains responsibility for clinical management as well as any subsequent medication. In addition to job description requirements, incumbents must also meet minimum criteria for medical staff privileges. Responsibilities: Appropriately prescribes pharmaceuticals according to age, chronic medical conditions, allergies, drug interactions, and duration of therapy. Perform routine and specialty physical exams and document specific age-related preventative health screening. Educates and counsels patients to promote wellness. Addresses and provides resources for health risk behaviors. Interprets diagnostic tests for patient and provides appropriate referrals or consultations. Performs technical and surgical procedures for patients as necessary. Appropriately dispenses pharmaceuticals according to age, chronic medical conditions, allergies, drug interactions, and duration of therapy. Completes patient discharge planning and education; writes appropriate orders and prescriptions. Performs patient education and counseling to promote wellness. Evaluates patient’s progress toward attaining expected outcomes. Evaluates effectiveness of interventions in relation to outcomes. Documents patient’s response to interventions. Upholds the professional code of ethics. Keeps all licenses/certifications up to date (including ACLS and PALS, if applicable). Provide agreed upon coverage to care for patients in the appropriate settings (ex. ambulatory office and/or hospital) during business hours and evening/weekends, as mutually agreed upon and per medical staff bylaws. The Department of Neurosurgery at the University of Iowa is actively recruiting an Advanced Practice Provider (i.e., Advanced Registered Nurse Practitioner or Physician Assistant) with a background and interest in pain management with a specific focus in the care of neurosurgical conditions of the spine. As the Advanced Practice Provider (APP), this position will coordinate with the attending surgeon and resident team to ensure that patients can receive their diagnosis and begin their treatment quickly. This position will spend time with patients in the ambulatory clinical setting, make follow-up phone calls, prepare patients for surgery, and follow patients through surgery on their road back to full recovery. The Department of Neurosurgery views ARNP/PAs as skilled professionals which are important to our practice and shall be well equipped and have the autonomy to see patients and support our physicians both independently and in a team setting. Having a physician and an advanced provider working in tandem allows us to provide better overall care for our most complex patients. BASIC FUNCTION Function as an APP and change agent incorporating the primary role of nurse practitioner/physician assistant and the supporting roles of consultant, educator, researcher and administrator to support quality care and positive patient outcomes. Exercise autonomy in medical decision-making for the Neurosurgery service. Function independently and as a member of an interdisciplinary team to plan, deliver, and evaluate health care for the Neurosurgery inpatient and outpatient population. Perform direct patient care. Assist in educating healthcare students, residents and fellows as they rotate through the respective departments and divisions. This position will work the full continuum of care from inpatient, outpatient, pediatrics and adult patient populations. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Performs a wide variety of inpatient and outpatient patient care activities and accommodative services to support the medical practice with effective utilization of healthcare resources. LICENSES AND/OR CERTIFICATIONS Current State license as an APRN or PA with specialization in Family or Pediatrics. Physician Assistants - Current National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants (NCCPA) certification required. Nurse Practitioner - Current certification from the Orthopaedic Nurses Certification Board (ONCB) preferred. CPR training required and/or must be obtained within 45 days of hire. PALS training obtained and maintained within 90 days of hire. MINIMUM EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS Must provide record of a completed diploma (or equivalent) or academic transcript for those areas performing complexity testing. Required to maintain State licensure, certification (NCCPA) for PA only, and educational and employment application requirements as a PA or NP during employment. Two to three years of Physician Assistant or Nurse Practitioner experience preferred. Two to three years of Pediatric experience preferred. Previous OR experience preferred.
